Gatbawi (or Gwanbong Seokjoyeoraejwasang) is a Buddhist statue in Daehan-ri, Wachon-myeon, Gyeongsan, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Republic of Korea. It was made in the Unified Silla Kingdom era and is well known with the name of Gatbawi Buddha (Stone Hat Buddha). It sits 4m tall, and the hat is a 15cm thick flat stone on his head,
This single granite sculpture was made up by Uihyeon, at the top of the 850 meters high rough Palgongsan and is surrounded by a screen-like rockwall as its background. It is said that Uihyeon made it in order to appease his mother's soul in the 7th ruling year of Queen Seondeok of Silla Kingdom. The legend says that a big crane flew in to guard him every night while he was making this Gatbawi Buddha. It is reputed to be a miraculous Buddha stone, which makes a response to prayers if the prayer prays for it with his or her whole heart.
Palgongsan, also Palgong Mountain, is a mountain in southeastern South Korea, lying on an outlier of the Taebaek range. It stands on the border between Daegu metropolitan city and North Gyeongsang province (including the districts of Chilgok County, Gunwi County, Yeongcheon, and Gyeongsan). Its peak is 1193 m above sea level.
The mountain is the site of a number of cultural and natural heritage sites. These include Buddhist shrines from the Silla period or later, including the large and active temple of Donghwasa and the Gunwi Triad Budda Grotto (National Treasure 109). In addition, in 927 the Battle of Gong Mountain was fought between Hubaekje and Goryeo forces on the mountain's southern slope.
Natural treasures include the standing stone of Gatbawi, so called from its resemblance to a traditional Korean horsehair hat, or gat.
The mountain, connected to downtown Daegu by bus, is a popular site for weekend outings from the city. Portions of the mountain were designated a provincial park in 1980.
There is several routes to reach Gatbawi. The easiest way is through Seon bon Temple. It takes less than 1 hour. If you wish your dream with your heartful mind, it will come true at least one your dream there. You can also enjoy hiking Palgong Mountain followed different hiking routes. 팔공산 등산로
팔공산(1,192ｍ)은 북으로 경상북도 경산시,영천시,군위군,칠곡군을 등지고, 남으로 대구광역시를감싸고 있는 대구의 진산이다. 주봉인 비로봉을 중심으로 동쪽으로 동봉∼관봉(갓바위), 서쪽으로 서봉∼가산산성까지 뻗은 20㎞의 긴 산맥을 형성하고 있다.
팔공산은 대구광역시와 경북4개 시ㆍ군에 걸쳐 있는 만큼 등산로도 다양하다. 아래 소개한 등산로는 많이 알려진 등산로이므로 초보자도 무난하게 팔공산의 절경을 구경하며 등산을 할 수 있을 것이다.
