Sun am Temple (선암사)
Geological research indicates that after the last glacial epoch, sea levels rose by about 160 meters. This transformed the western landmass of Korea into sea and the Korean Peninsula topography developed as it is known today. It's believed that the brackish water, mud, and sand that is deposited by the Dong-Cheon river into the Bay Area created an extensive sandbank that was formed over thousands of years.
Suncheon Bay is considered to be a treasure house for the hosting of a variety of marine, plant, and bird species. With limited exposure to pollution and to further development as a salt wetland, this area provides ample opportunities for study and research. Areas for study include: Fresh marine produce, a variety of invertebrate sea-life, and an array of marine plants. An extended bed of reeds provides habitat to a variety of national birds such as Hooded Cranes, Seagulls, White Storks, Blackface Spoonbills and White Herons.
Suncheon bay is known to be the area which rare birds inhabit and especially the unique habitat of a hooded crane.
